Genre Database- PETS!

Hi! The genre I selected was pets magazines and their target audience is pet owners.
Genre conventions:
  • Content
    • Has to do with pet and human interaction- how pets impact humans life and how we impact theirs
    • Pet care- pet safety, health care, food recommendations, cat litter, recently many magazines are talking about pets and cannabis
    • Pet problem solving- housing,
    • Pet advice
    • Crafts- treats, scratching posts, pet toys
    • Pet behavior, training
    • Advertisements for pet products- catcam, pet food, health products, etc.
  • Production techniques
      • Always have an animal on the front cover by themselves depending on the magazine. For example, dog magazines will have a dog and cat magazines will have a cat
      • Colors often used on the front cover are: pink, black, red, yellow, orange, and blue
      • Very popular magazines have a magazine for cats and for dogs
This genre is typically marketed as a fun, helpful tool for pet owners.
Magazine samples:
Modern dog
  • Sample #1: Modern Dog magazine (fall 2018 version) has articles about how CBD affects canines and whether it's good for them which gives information about dogs health. Following this article, there are advertisements and descriptions for pet CBD products.  Another featured article is one about if whether or not dogs should be allowed to sleep in our beds. In this article the writer discusses reasons why people like sleeping with their dogs and have a vet explain the negative effects. This is about how dogs impact our life. The cover of the magazine features a dog alone and text and banners in red, pink, yellow, and blue.
Modern Cat
  • Sample #2: One of Modern Cat magazine’s featured articles is about pet behavior and how to read your cat's body language. Another one is about CBD and cats and again has advertisements of pet CBD products. There is also another article featuring advertisements about how to incorporate cat products into your life. The front cover of the fall/winter 2018 edition of the magazine has an image of a cat by itself and the colors: pink, red, blue, and yellow.
